Not far from downtown Phoenix lies an arts and culture gem: Fountain Hills, Arizona. I recently paid my first visit to the town of Fountain Hills on my way to the Fountain Hills Theater to see the play “The 39 Steps,” featuring Phoenix Sky Harbor’s talented Deputy Aviation Director, Deborah Ostreicher.
The drive into Fountain Hills reminded me how peaceful and serene it feels to step outside the city. It’s easy to forget how much diversity we have just a stone’s throw away from our everyday lives.
Wine and Dine in Fountain Hills
Before the show, we found a local spot to have a glass of wine. Grapeables, recently named one of the 50 best bars in the Valley by Phoenix Magazine, was our selection. I was pleasantly surprised to find a wine lovers’ paradise, with many options of wine available and unique and entertaining live music always playing. The wine bar overlooks the famed Fountain Hills fountain, so the view was spectacular, even though the sun had already set.
After taking in the scenery for some time, we learned the restaurant is family-owned and extremely tied to the community. The owner’s son, after hearing that we were going to a show, told us stories about the Fountain Hills Theater and how he had volunteered there in High School. He said the theater is beloved by the community and the family still enjoys the rotation of plays that are performed throughout the year.
Experiencing Arts and Culture Just Outside of Phoenix
The Fountain Hills Theater, a non-profit community theater, is a tranquil and cozy venue. We were greeted by volunteers who welcomed us graciously (we must have been the last to arrive) There’s truly not a bad seat in the house, and the intimate setting made us feel at home. During intermission, we were offered wine and cookies. It doesn’t get better than that!
The play, “The 39 Steps,” was a fast-paced, comedic thriller with entertaining twists and turns. Only four actors played 150 characters, so if you blinked, you might’ve missed one.
Little did I know, the arts and culture scene is alive in Fountain Hills. I encourage everyone to go take in a play and enjoy a local Fountain Hills restaurant; I promise you won’t regret it.
