Yavapai-Apache Nation

The Yavapai-Apache Nation, a federally recognized sovereign Indian Nation, is comprised of descendants of the Wipukyipai (Yavapai) and Dil zhéé (Tonto Apache) peoples. The Yavapai speak the Yuman dialect and the Apache speak the Athabascan dialect.

Under the Indian Reorganization Act, of 1932, the Yavapai and Apache people were officially recognized as sovereign people by the federal government. In 1992, under a revision in their tribal constitution, the tribe became know as the Yavapai-Apache Nation.

Today, the reservation spans over four tribal communities including Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Middle Verde and Rimrock and encompasses more than 1,600 acres throughout the Verde Valley.

Montezuma's Castle National Monument along with Montezuma's Well and Tuzigoot, are prehistoric Indian cliff dwellings that are within close proximity to the reservation. Other nearby attractions are the red rocks of Sedona, the famous ghost mining town of Jerome and the Fort Verde State Park at Camp Verde.

Montezuma Castle National Monument stands in a cliff recess 100 ft. above the valley. Sinaguan farmers began building this five-story, 20-room dwelling early in the 12th century.  Link to page

Montezuma's Well is a limstone sink formed long ago by the collapse of an immense undergrownd cavern.  Link to page

Tuzigoot National Monument is the remnant of a Sinaguan village built between 1125 A.D. and 1400 A.D. Tuzigoot National Monument is about 50 miles sound of Flagstaff.  Link to page

The Yavapai-Apache Nation is situated on five separate parcels in the beautiful high desert country of the Verde Valley in central Arizona. The Tribal Administration complex is located just west of I-17, exit 289; 90 miles north of Phoenix and 55 miles south of Flagstaff.
