Architecture

Love architecture? From modernist homes to Native American ruins, you’ll find myriad structures of architectural interest to visit in Arizona.

Ancient Architecture: Ancient Native American architecture can be seen at sites like Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park, Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Tuzigoot and others across Arizona.

Spanish Colonial Architecture: In Southern Arizona, the Spanish Colonial style was mixed with indigenous design at the Mission San Xavier del Bac, as well as the Owls Club and Steinfeld Houses in Tucson. Meanwhile, Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, who designed both buildings and interiors for the Fred Harvey Company, influenced the Northern Arizona landscape.

Desert-Modern Architecture: Arizona’s most famous architect is inarguably Frank Lloyd Wright, who built his summer home and architectural school in the desert near Scottsdale in 1937. Known as Taliesin West, the winter camp still showcases Wright’s architectural theories with public tours and events – as well as stunning architecture of its own. Other Wright-designed buildings are scattered across Arizona, including Gammage Auditorium at Arizona State University in Tempe.
